VPN Access to URI Resources

Overview

Various URI resources, like websites, servers, etc., are, for security reasons not normally accessible outside of on-campus networks. Setting up VPN access allows you to gain access to these resources from off-campus.

After setting everything up:

1. Run the Cisco AnyConnect software on your computer

2. Connect with:

  • vpn.uri.edu
  • Group: select URI
  • Username: Active Directory (AD) username
  • Password: eight-digit code generated from RSA SecurID phone app

Setup

This service is provided by the Office of Information Security, and their offical documentation is here: http://security.uri.edu/vpn/

Below is a supplemental step-by-step guide provided by URI's central IT Services group. Questions to the below can be directed to Chi Shen (cshen@uri.edu).

Requirements

  • Windows or Mac laptop/desktop
  • iOS or Android smartphone

1. Install the VPN software on your computer

2. Install the RSA SecurID phone app

  • Search for “RSA SecurID” in your phone's app store and install it.

3. Acquire VPN password "token" for import into phone app

  • In order for this RSA SecurID app to generate the VPN login password, you need to request a “token” to import into the app, from URI's Info Security office, from this page: http://bit.ly/2msUipU
    • The login for getting this token is your Active Directory (AD) credentials. This is not the guaranteed to be the same as any of your other URI logins, and it's rarely used, so for most people, it's easiest to just call the Help Desk (401-874-4357) to reset it for yourself.
    • Be sure to select the right type of token – for most people it should be iOS or Android, depending on what kind of phone you have.
  • The Security will issue the token via an email as an attachment – open this attachment from your email on your phone. Your phone should allow you to open the attachment with the RSA SecurID app for import.
